Emma Rose is 11

Let me start this off by saying hello to Emma.  I know for a fact that my Bigs like to read this blog at times, which is so cool by the way, so I figured that I'd let them know that I know they are lurking around.

I never really know which direction these posts will go.  I always try to provide a snapshot of what is going on around the time of the birthday.  Likes, dislikes, life in general--that kind of stuff.  I usually always am sappy, too.  My sap game is strong and forever will be, so let's see where this goes, shall we?

I often say that I never knew that I needed a daughter until I had one.  I stand by that fact.  I will even go as far as saying, that I didn't just need a daughter, I needed an Emma.  Emma has been doing things her own way, on her own time since day one.  Being born early--when she wanted to be, should have been the tip-off that this girl beats to her own drum.

Emma, I'll start with the facts.  You are a funny, kind, sensitive soul.  You make me smile with your antics, you make me think with your questions, you make me laugh with your comments on "cartoon logic" and the fact that you think you are part animal.  You are the "little mother" of the group and you are always my go to when I need a helping hand. (sorry, you're just so good at helping!)  You are Jack's other half, Sara's favorite human, and Alex's very best friend.  Daddy and I just love the energy you bring into our lives every single day.

You are a talented artist, you're in the school band and your long-lasting passion for dancing has continued in your second year of the dance troupe at school.  I love that you do so many things to channel your endless amounts of creativity.  Whereas I'm impressed with your band and dance accomplishments, it's your painting and drawing that blows me away the most.  I can't comprehend how you have such vision and can make it translate into your work.

You are growing up.  The occasional stomping up the stairs, slamming of the doors and angsty vibe that I've been getting these days is a stark reminder that you really are getting older.  So vivid are your baby days, so as we enter your preteen years, I reminded as to how quickly time flies and how every day with you (and your siblings) is so precious.

Emma, my beautiful Rose.  The teacher of all things.  Your wisdom is beyond your years.  Your insight is admirable.  Your love for all things in nature is a huge part of who you are.  I have said for many years that you "speak for the trees" and you haven't let me down.  You don't only speak for the trees, you speak for all animals and all of nature, as well.  I jokingly call you "Captain Planet" or "The Lorax", but you really ARE those things.  Your commitment to wanting to make this world a better place is commendable and I hope you never lose sight of what is important.  I think everyone reading this could learn a lot from you, Em.  I know I can and have, and I continue to each and every single day.  So, thank you for that.  I will continue to learn, as long as you continue to teach.

Em, you are not only a great daughter, but you're just a pretty incredible human.  My grandmother always used to say "There's just something about Emma", and I can't help but agree.  There IS something about you, Em.  Never lose all of the things that make you YOU.

There's only 1 thing, 2 say, 3 words, 4 you....I LOVE YOU.

And, as always,
I thank you for chosing me
To come through unto life to be
A beautiful reflection of his grace
For I know a gift so great
Is only one God could create
and I'm reminded every time I see your face
