Alex, sweet Alex
Well, on December 24th, my littlest little bird turned one. I don't recall a first year ever going by as quickly as Al's did. He has brought us such great joy (and a plethora of new gray hair), that I can't believe he's 'only' been around a year.
When you find out that you are pregnant for the fourth time in five and a half years, a lot goes through your head. Especially when you are in a tiny two bedroom townhouse that you are busting out of. I will admit that I wasn't the happiest I've ever been. Throw in the terrible sickness that lasted all day, every day, I was miserable. I just didn't understand how things were going to work. As the months went on, things began to work themselves out. We sold the tiny townhouse, we bought a 'house house', and we found out that you were a boy. Not that I would have loved a girl any less, but to have 2 of each, to give Jack the brother he's always asked for, it was special.
In the back of my mind, I knew that I would be in the hospital on Christmas. I just knew it. I had scheduled my section for the 26th, so I would be home on Christmas day to see Jack, Emma, and Sara open their presents. I still knew, though. And I knew when I contracted the stomach bug from hell, that this would be my undoing. Oh, let me just clear some things up. I was truly sick with a stomach virus. Greg had it first and was about 6 hours ahead of me in being sick. I was not in labor the whole day, just towards the end of the virus running it's course. It was undeniable, then. I knew when I called my doctor, that he would tell me to go to the hospital and that he would section me. I just knew it would happen this way. I missed Christmas and was really upset. But, to miss Christmas one year, to have a lifetime of that smiling face? I'll take it.
Alex Michael. My Ally. My A-Buddy. My Papa Smurf. My Bub. My Gus-Gus. My Little Monkey Man. Let me start by saying, I'm sorry for all of the ridiculous nicknames. It's just what I do. Ask Jackaboo, Rosie and Sassy. Or Dude, EBFresh, and Saya. Or...well, you get the picture.
You are such a little ball of endless energy. You have a smile that lights up the room. You have not been very cuddly over this first year, but every once in a while you put your head on my shoulder and just stay there, cooing, and 'talking', and it's the best feeling ever. You have such similarities to all 3 of your siblings. Daddy and I try to figure out who you are most like, and I think Emma is the winner. The undeniable December Connection. I love that you two have that. You are SO close and you love each other SO much.
You love all of your siblings so much, but Emma is by far your favorite. She loves to take care of you, she always has, and she just lights up when you're around. Well, we ALL light up when you're around.
You are WILD. You hate sitting still. You hate being contained in any way. You just want to go go go . I wasn't prepared for this, Al. All of the others have had their wild moments, for sure, but you take the cake. Climbing everything, eating everything, walking at 10 and a half months, running at 11. You're favorite word to say? NO. How do you say it? While shaking your head. You're so FRESH! You crack me up, though.
Your laugh is contagious. And you laugh often! You're always so happy. Unless you are unhappy, which is not a lot, but you let us know. You SCREECH like a velociraptor, when you want attention. You also fake cry. You also have this laugh, which is best described as a cross between Flipper and Gus (the mouse from Cinderella.) I don't know why you do it (or HOW, I've tried to replicate it and have been very unsuccessful) but it's HYSTERICAL.
You have SUCH love for your Daddy. You yell when he comes in the door from work and practically dive into his arms. You love your Uncle Joe SO much, as well. You don't like when he leaves the house!!
So, Alex. Now you know what it's like having you around. It's never quiet. You're always going. Screaming. Laughing. Yelling. Melting Mommy's heart. That seems to be your daily routine. You have taught me a lot, Dude. You've taught me that 4 kids is HARD work! But, I still contend, raising you guys has been the best job I've ever had. Thank you, Alex for being the perfect addition to our family. You are such a bright light in our lives and I cannot imagine us without you.
I love you, Smurfy.
