I'm very fortunate. Not one of my children has ever been to the hospital for an extended amount of time. I took Jack once to the ER, because he hurt his foot. I swore it was broken, but once we got there, he was running around, so we left without being seen. Once, when Emma was a baby, she had a big, fat, gross tick on her head, so we took her to the ER to get it pulled out. Emma also had stitches in her chin. Sara was rushed via ambulance to the ER when she was a baby, due to bronchiolitis, but was discharged after a breathing treatment, and then she went again, after Hurricane Sandy, because she had a 103 temp and her dr's office was closed. So, really, I'm very lucky.
That said, since Al has been around, he's had...issues, but one issue had been there since birth. His belly button was ugly. Okay, alright, it was more than just ugly. It protruded. It bled. it oozed. It scabbed. We would catch it in zippers. It was terribly painful to him, and as he got older he would tug at it and make it bleed some more.
We had taken him to the doctor 3 times to try and get it rectified, and every time they cauterized it and nothing happened. So, they finally figured out that it needed to be surgically removed. A quick surgery, but surgery nonetheless, and he'd be put completely under.
We got to the hospital very early that morning. He was allowed to walk around and play until it was time for him to go in. Right before they took him in, they gave him a sedative. He was hilarious as the meds began to work. It was the longest he sat still since he was born. He went in and 20 minutes later, the surgery was finished. We were allowed to see him right away. as they came to get us because he was hysterical in recovery. He was inconsolable and obviously in pain, so they had to give him a shot of morphine. That was probably the worst part of it, seeing him in that state and not being able to do anything about it. Once the morphine took effect, we were moved up to pediatrics. He was drinking so well that they took his IV out right away and that made him so much better. He was Alex, again. We were discharged after he ate and played for a while. His recovery was quick and relatively painless on both of us. We had his follow up a couple of weeks ago and everything is fine!
I'm so glad it's over with and that he's pain free!
