Reading, Writing and 'Rithmatic...

Pop quiz, when YOU were in kindergarten, what did you do?  If your response is "take naps and eat glue", you are probably around the same age I am, and that would be my answer as well.  These days, kindergarten is apparently the "new first grade" and it's a far cry from those nap-taking, glue-eating days.

Jack gets a packet of homework at the beginning of each week.  Included in the packet is math homework, 5 book reviews, a reading all-star sheet (kind of like a book report), and writing homework.  It seems to be an awful lot of work for a 5 year old, but I digress...

...I digress because HOLY CRAP has he learned so much so quickly!  We had his parent/teacher conference last week and she just raved about him.  He's progressing with his reading, is learning how to spell by sounding words out, is ridiculously wonderful at math (which, if you know me, you will find that statement incredibly hilarious).  The teacher told Greg and I that when they take math tests (yes, tests in kindergarten) she sits him at a different table so other children won't cheat off of him!  He's in AP Kindergarten Math, for crap's sake!  I can't even stand it.

As we were reading a bedtime story last night, I let him help me.  He recognized some of the smaller words VERY easily, and was sounding other words out.  I'm so impressed!  This is my BABY and he's READING?!

And let's talk about the stories he comes up with.  They are assigned a story every week, a story that they come up with, write out, and illustrate.  I love to hear his thought processes, and I love to watch him come up with his stories.  I hope and pray that he loves to write as much as I do.  It's just so much fun!

I will say, it's a lot to have to sit with him, with 2 other kids running around.  That's my biggest complaint.  He's distracted by the noise, and it really reinforces our need to get out of here.  I could see the lack of quiet space becoming an issue as they all get older.

Here are a couple of pics of Boo doing his homework.  I'm just so proud of him.  So, so proud.
