To 1 and 2 on the last day of summer
Here we are again. The summer has flown by. I know how fast it goes, and I think this year, that you noticed it, too. I'm sorry that happens. That time goes by whether we're ready for it, or not. I wish I could tell you that it stops, or that it gets easier, but I'd be lying. It goes faster as you get older and it stinks.
This summer was spent playing, and going to parks. We built tents and had picnics in front of the TV. We played in the pool and in the water table. We went to the beach and you experienced your first boat ride to the Statue of Liberty. As far as experiences go, I think you had a few great ones and I'm so grateful that I got to share them with you.
Tomorrow, we get back to business. I'm ready for school to start. You're ready for school to start. I'm not ready for school to start. You're not ready for school to start. Confusing? Yeah, to me, too.
I love having you guys here. I love our conversations and our Cupcake Wars marathons. Life is so much more laid back and less stressful when you're here. All of my little birds are in one spot, and we come and go as we please. I realize that it can't always be like that, but I do enjoy it while I have it.
With another new school year, comes a new set of school related issues. Trouble with homework, bus issues, "so and so" was mean to you, etc... I think that's what bothers me the most. Last years problems are long forgotten over the summer and come September, it starts all over again. There is no way to stop this, or shield you from this, but as your mother, it frustrates me. Live and let live, I guess, but my slightly controlling nature has a hard time with that.
Third grade is a big deal, Jack. Second grade wasn't so easy for you, but you rocked it and you made the best of it. I'm so proud of you for that. My wish for you this school year is that you find your confidence. That you realize how awesome you are. That you really pay attention and allow yourself to learn. I wish for you amazing peers and two great teachers who 'get' you. I wish you a successful year filled with happiness and times tables and smiles.
First grade will be great for you, Emma. Kindergarten was almost too easy for you, so I'm hoping that carries over to first grade. You're lucky, I learned first grade math when Jack was doing it, so it won't be as hard for me to help you with your homework! My wish for you this school year is that you find your way, that you build up your confidence and that you realize you are a rock star. I hope you find a best friend, someone that will play with you and talk to you and that will listen to you. I wish for you to have a great relationship with your teacher and that you really enjoy reading.
What are your dreams? Your wishes? Don't tell me, keep them to yourself. Reach for them. Make them come true. Always know that you have my unwavering support and love. Your happiness is MY happiness.
I love you more than you'll ever know. Thank you for a great summer, filled with laughter and fun.
School year 2015-2016, I see you. Be kind. Be great. Be good...to all of us.
